The Air Force Invitational indoor track meet ended Saturday with three new Cadet Field House records and a second place finish by the Falcon men in the 13-team field that included a victory over Alabama-a team that finished fourth in last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Colorado won the men's meet with 103 points, just five points better than the Falcons. Brigham Young (96.50), and Alabama (91.50) finished third and fourth respectively. Fresno State won the women's team title with 126 points followed by Colorado (120.5) and Wyoming (95). The Falcon women finished seventh in the 12-team field with 28 points.
Records were set in the women's pole vault, men's long jump and the 60-meter hurdles. Alabama's Ron Bramlett posted a time of 7.58 in the hurdles to better the mark of 7.59 set by Texas A & M's Larry Wade in 1998. In the long jump, Alabama teammate Miguel Pate jumped 26-feet, 3 ½-inches to better the old 1998 record of 26-feet ¼ -inch set by Kevin Dilworth form Addidas Track Club. Andrea Dutoit, competing as an unattached athlete, set the new field house standard in the pole vault at a height of 13-feet, 5 ¼-inches.
How did the men finish with 98 points?
The biggest contribution came from sophomore Anthony Park with 16 points. Park finished second in both the long jump (23-feet, 10-inches) and the triple jump (50-feet, 5 ½-inches). His triple jump mark was just ¾ of an inch short of setting a new school record.
"Anthony had just an exceptional day," said head track coach Ralph Lindeman. "He just keeps getting better and better and I am very confident that he will be the school record holder in both events before he leaves us."
Park scored the most individual points, but there were several good performances by the Falcons on the men side.
In the 3,000-meter run, Brian Carpenter posted a time of 8:47.59 for a fourth-place finish in his season debut. Nick Bromberek finished third and earned six points in the 200-meter dash with a clocking of 21.96. In the 5,000-meter run, the Falcons earned 12 points with finishes in third, fifth and seventh. Brian Dumm was the top finisher with a time of 15:51.16 followed by Thomas Kubler (16:20l72) and Adam Chitwood (16:30.14). Bryant Bevan finished second in the 800-meters (1:56.35) and Jason Sanders came in fourth (1:57.24) to add another 12 points to the total.
"Our middle distance and distance runners really made their season debut today and they performed exceptionally well. They are a very big strength of this year's team, thanks to Mark Stanforth, my distance coach. I just see us getting better and better as the season progresses," Lindeman said.
The Falcon women's team best performance on Saturday came from Cindy Dawson in the 800-meter run. She finished second with a clocking of 2:22.72 to earn eight points. Fifth place finishes were turned in by Mary Uhler in the 5,000-meters (20:39.09, Latravia Robinson in the long jump (17-feet, 1 ¼-inches) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Stephanie Cornell, Katy Crow, Jami Hodge and Ainsley Thraikill.
"Our women's team is very young and a meet of this caliber is a good learning experience for them," Lindeman said. "I was pleased with their performance and a meet like this is only going to make our newcomers better as we look towards our conference championship."
Next up for Air Force is another home meet next Saturday, Feb. 2, billed as the Pac-10-Mountain West Challenge. Air Force and Colorado State will go against Arizona and Stanford.
