C1C Angelica Plazas, a member of the Academy's fencing team, is the women's fencing team captain for the 2008-09 season.

Plazas, a four-year exchange cadet from Colombia, spent part of her summer working the low crawl and high crawl obstacle during the first two weeks of second basic cadet training (BCT). During this time she "encouraged" every member of the class of 2012 through her obstacle.

The Obstacle Course is composed of a series of obstacles challenging the basics of 2012 both mentally and physically. The course includes 17 stations including low crawl, high wall, rope ladder and a water pit with a rope swing. Basics run the course twice with the "encouragement" of the course cadre. The first time through they are instructed how to complete each obstacle and on the second run through cadre ensure the basics get a good work out by leading a series of exercises in addition to the standard verbal support.

As a basic, "I remember pushing myself past what I thought I was capable of in order to cross the water pit located at the final obstacle," said Plazas. "It has been a rewarding and memorable experience and I hope the obstacle course will continue to be part of BCT in the future."

Her exercise of choice is basically a modified body builder.
